Pres: Kiev to sue Russia in UN Tribunal over Crimea sea rights
KIEV, Aug 24 (PRIME) -- Ukraine plans to send a claim against Russia to the United Nations Dispute Tribunal over the sovereign rights to the waters surrounding Crimea, President Pyotr Poroshenko said at a meeting with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda on Wednesday.
“Ukraine will turn to the UN international tribunal over the sea rights in connection with a violation of a corresponding convention by Russia,” Poroshenko said without disclosing details of the claim.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin said earlier that Kiev will soon submit a lawsuit regarding sovereign rights to the Crimean seas. Ukraine had finished pre-litigation consultations with Russia and is ready to send the claim, he said.
Vice Chairman of the regional government Ruslan Balbek told PRIME that Crimea plans to file a counter-case against Ukraine, demanding compensation of all damage done during its 20-year rule over the territory.
